Job Title: Community Outreach Coordinator

Location: The Studio for Dance and the Arts / The Rockbridge Ballet, Lexington Virginia

Overview:

We are seeking an energetic, detail-oriented, and organized Community Outreach Coordinator to support our dynamic dance studio and company for the 2026-2027 season. The Community Outreach Coordinator will work directly with the Executive/Artistic Director to enhance our outreach in the Rockbridge County area, as well as assist with class structure, dancer growth, and company productions. The ideal candidate will be passionate about the arts, organized, and proactive in building partnerships that benefit both the dance school and the local area. We are looking for applicants with expertise in Ballet, Acrobatics, Tap, and Hip Hop, although we also welcome applicants with skills in Creative Movement, Pointe, Jazz, and Modern. Applicants should have experience teaching dance, particularly to young children, and a strong desire to foster creativity and build foundational movement skills. Teachers in this role will be responsible for engaging students of all ages, with an emphasis on developing children’s love for movement and dance.

Key Responsibilities:

Community Engagement & Events:

  • Develop and coordinate the school’s involvement in local community events such as downtown trick-or-treating performances, the Christmas parade, visiting local schools and libraries, and other seasonal or culturally significant events.
  • Serve as the point of contact between the dance school and local community organizations, helping to foster and strengthen partnerships.
  • Organize and supervise student performances and activities at local events to increase the school’s visibility and contribute to community enrichment.

Field Trips & Master Classes:

  • Organize and facilitate field trips for company dancers to attend professional performances and master classes, providing students with valuable exposure to the broader dance community.
  • Organizing transportation and pickup/drop off.

Public Performances & Choreography:

  • Plan, organize, and choreograph public performances that are not traditional stage events, including performances at local retirement communities, schools, and other community spaces.
  • Collaborate with dancers to develop appropriate performances that align with the school’s mission and showcase students’ talents.

School Engagement:

  • Coordinate school assemblies and other educational outreach initiatives that allow students to showcase their skills and inspire others.
  • Build relationships with local schools to create new opportunities for engagement and performance.
  • Lead outreach activities that support the school’s commitment to arts education in the community.

Studio Operations:

  • Assist in the daily operations of the dance studio.
  • Teach multiple classes in various dance styles each week.
  • Participate in company placement auditions and casting for company performances.

Leadership and Support:

  • Step into a leadership role in the absence of the Executive Director or Senior Assistant Director, ensuring that all aspects of the studio run smoothly.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to assist in decision-making and studio growth initiatives.

Teaching Classes and Attending Extra Events:

  • Teach a minimum of 3 days a week at The Studio for Dance and the Arts (days to be determined by the Director). Classes may include Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz, Children’s Dance, Hip Hop, Acrobatics, Pointe, etc.
  • Choreograph multiple pieces for The Rockbridge Ballet and Studio performances, in a variety of dance styles for multiple ages.
  • Attend additional rehearsals and events, including Open House, Company Auditions, full-company performance rehearsals prior to performance week, fundraisers, etc.
  • Assist with year-end recital duties by attending all stage rehearsals, assisting in the transport of costumes, props, etc. back and forth to the theater, and attending all performances.
  • Participate in parent conferences regarding casting or placement when necessary.

Qualifications:

  • BA, BFA, or MFA in dance preferred but not required.
  • Strong organization and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Comfortable working directly with students, parents, and staff.
  • Strong work ethic, professionalism, and a passion for dance.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience teaching and choreographing in at least four of the following: Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Acrobatics, Hip Hop, or Creative Movement.
  • Experience teaching students of various ages and skill levels, ages range from 3-adult.
  • Certification or professional training in acrobatics or early childhood dance education is a plus.
  • Strong classroom management and teaching skills, particularly for young children.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper technique and offer clear corrections to students.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially when engaging with children and their parents.
  • Must be available to teach Monday through Thursday, with classes starting around 3:30 PM (specific days may vary based on the schedule).
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Applicants must be available for an interview and a sample teaching class as part of the application process.
  • Experience in lighting design is a plus.

Compensation:

  • This is a full-time, salaried position.
  • Salary commensurate with experience.

We are specifically looking for a teacher with expertise in Creative Movement, Acrobatics, Tap, and Hip Hop, although we also welcome applicants with skills in Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, and Modern. Applicants should have experience teaching dance, particularly to young children, and a strong desire to foster creativity and build foundational movement skills. Teachers in this role will be responsible for engaging students of all ages, with an emphasis on developing young dancers’ love for movement and dance. Teachers will also be involved in the Year End Recital production in May 2027.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach dance classes for students of various ages in Creative Movement, Acrobatics, Tap, or Hip Hop, with the option to teach other styles, including Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, and Modern.
  • Develop age-appropriate lesson plans for young children that encourage creativity, motor skill development, and an early love for dance.
  • For older students, teach more advanced classes, providing clear instruction and safe techniques.
  • Foster a positive, encouraging, and supportive learning environment for all students, especially young children, to help them grow both technically and artistically.
  • Ensure all students are safely and effectively guided through their lessons.
  • Maintain a professional and punctual demeanor, arriving at least 15 minutes before each scheduled class.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and staff to support the overall growth of the dance program.
  • Attend rehearsals and performances for the Year End Recital, and additional events including our Open House.

  • Experience working with young children and teaching dance to students of various ages and skill levels, ages range from 3-18.
  • Strong classroom management and teaching skills, particularly for young children.

  • Must be available to teach Monday through Thursday, with classes starting around 3:30 PM (specific days may vary based on the schedule).
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Additional Details:

  • Schedule: Flexible, based on availability. Classes are typically scheduled after school hours, starting at 3:30 PM, Monday – Thursday.
  • Sample Class Requirement: Applicants will be asked to teach a sample class and participate in an interview to showcase teaching style and technical knowledge.

Compensation:

This is a part-time position offering a competitive hourly rate based on experience and expertise.
